What Does A Frontier In Artificial Intelligence Research Mean?
Recently, I’ve had several people ask me which is the “new frontier in artificial intelligence research”? They each have a strong opinion on this topic. In other words, each of them has a different definition of what constitutes new and exciting in artificial intelligence research. One person stated that it was something like self-improvement. Someone else thought it was the computerization of human minds.
Then some believe we are already seeing the birth of a new frontier in artificial intelligence research. They see Artificial Intelligent software and supercomputers as being on the same frontier – or at least they are soon to meet. This seems to me to be an unusual definition of what is now possible. Humans and artificially intelligent computers can communicate with each other. However, it is not likely they will form a partnership to solve human problems.
Perhaps an even more interesting definition is that of the think tank. Many people think of think tanks as hubs of ideas for researchers, college students, and others. Many think tanks were founded as learning institutions where ideas are exchanged and discussed. Yet, this definition does not clearly define what a think tank actually is. A think tank may be a collection of experts with differing perspectives who are often brought together by a common agenda.
The new frontier in artificial intelligence research could be another definition. Some might say it is the next frontier in finding better approaches to solve human problems. Still, others might say it is the next phase in artificial general intelligence. Still, yet, others see it as something completely different – as another tool for creative thinking.
To define a think tank, one must take into account the membership of the think tank. Each member of the think tank has his/her own unique perspectives on how artificial intelligence should be designed, developed, and deployed. These may include a special interest in a particular industry, such as autonomous vehicles, computer chip technology, and machine learning. They may also have a different view on what it means to be intelligent. Theoretically, all members of a think tank can contribute to something different, no matter what their original views on the topic may be.
Another definition is that of the editorial board. A director or editor for such a think tank would be responsible for making sure that the research done by the think tank is unbiased and thorough. It is the responsibility of the editorial board to make sure the research is done in a way that will produce a new frontier in artificial intelligence research. For instance, a think tank might choose to focus its attention on the future of business technologies. Then, a separate group might look into the current state of business technologies.
An editorial board may issue a report on their findings, which they will publish along with a preprint copy of an academic journal. This may point out a problem or areas of concern. They may decide to publish both a news article and a blog post on the report. This may point out a flaw in a specific aspect of the new frontier in artificial intelligence research.
